Sunday’s NFL Chaos: Breakouts, Injuries, and Records

The first Sunday of the 2026 season delivered a mix of surprise wins, early injuries, and history-making performances. Several teams looked sharp, several looked unfinished, and a few quarterbacks immediately changed the conversation around their clubs.

First-Time Play-Callers Delivered Mixed Results

Four new offensive voices opened their tenures on Sunday, and the early returns were uneven. Mike LaFleur guided Arizona to an upset over the Chargers as an 8.5-point underdog, with Jacoby Brissett throwing for 277 yards and the defense producing two timely turnovers. Klint Kubiak’s Raiders also came out ahead, leaning on a stronger offensive line to help Ashton Jeanty post a breakout outing against Miami.

Joe Brady’s Bills chose aggression from the start, taking shots downfield and pushing Buffalo away from its usual script. Josh Allen completed 6 of 7 passes that traveled more than 10 air yards in the first half, finishing with a fast-paced approach that set the tone. Todd Monken’s debut in Cleveland went the other direction, as the Browns were thumped 34-10 by Jacksonville while Deshaun Watson looked rusty in his first regular-season action since October 2024 and a Garrett-less defense struggled to hold up.

New York and Tennessee Sent Different Messages

New York made one of the loudest statements of the day by beating Dallas 28-20. The Giants ran for 165 yards, while Jaxson Dart added 230 passing yards, three touchdown throws, and 54 rushing yards in a ready debut that looked far steadier than anyone expected.

The result also snapped Dallas’ recent edge in the rivalry, where the Cowboys had taken 16 of the previous 18 meetings. With Philadelphia and Washington still searching for dominance, New York suddenly looks capable of staying in the NFC East race, and tight end Isaiah Likely was a major part of that surge with eight catches on eight targets for 78 yards and two scores.

Dallas, meanwhile, looked disorganized under new defensive playcaller Christian Parker. Seven first-half penalties and a late taunting call that wiped out an extra point in a one-score game made the Cowboys’ afternoon even messier.

In another efficient showing, the Jets handled Tennessee 23-10 with balance on both sides of the ball. Geno Smith stayed turnover-free, and New York’s receivers had already surpassed 148 yards by the third quarter.

Big Numbers Came Fast Across the League

Chicago and Carolina combined for 96 points in the Bears’ 59-37 victory, setting the record for the highest-scoring season opener in NFL history. Caleb Williams accounted for 269 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns, while Carolina’s defense gave up the most points ever allowed by the franchise after a heavy offseason investment in its front seven.

Josh Allen added to his career ledger in Buffalo’s 36-31 win over Houston. The game gave him his ninth career performance with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns, extending a record margin that already leads the league by five games, and he also became the first player to reach 300 combined touchdowns within nine seasons.

Baltimore’s Derrick Henry turned in one of the most powerful games of the day, rushing for 144 yards and three touchdowns in a rout of Indianapolis. That effort moved him past Jim Brown for the most career games with 100 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns. Detroit also needed overtime to edge New Orleans 31-30, and rookie back Jahmyr Gibbs reached 51 career touchdowns in just his 50th game, a pace matched by only a handful of players in league history.

Quarterback Depth Was Tested Immediately

Several teams were forced to adjust on the fly when their starting quarterbacks were knocked off course. Minnesota lost Kyler Murray after only 11 plays because of a concussion, but Carson Wentz stepped in and threw three touchdowns as the Vikings erased a 29-point deficit to beat Green Bay 39-22. Wentz is expected to remain the starter until Murray clears concussion protocol.

Atlanta did not get the same lift from its backup situation. Cooper Rush had a difficult afternoon replacing the injured Tua Tagovailoa in a loss to Pittsburgh, and the Falcons are now hoping Michael Penix Jr. can return by Week 2. Indianapolis also had a rough return to action, as Daniel Jones came back from a torn Achilles in a lopsided defeat that was shaped more by a shaky offensive line than by the injury itself. Washington’s Jayden Daniels started slowly against Philadelphia, completing only 6 of 16 passes in the first half before settling in late during a narrow loss.

Fantasy Players Who Changed Value Right Away

Week 1 also reshaped early fantasy expectations. Isaiah Likely owned the best tight end line of the week with eight catches, 78 yards, and two touchdowns, while Ashton Jeanty backed up his preseason hype with 32.7 fantasy points and two 13-yard receiving scores. Christian Watson turned into a strong early-week surprise with 147 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions, and Trey McBride stayed productive with his eighth 20-plus fantasy-point game in 13 outings with Brissett under center.

Lamar Jackson also looked ready for another explosive stretch, finishing with 324 passing yards, 41 rushing yards, and two total touchdowns in a performance that points to another elite fantasy season. Dontayvion Wicks, who is still rostered in only 10% of leagues, made a case as a speculative pickup with two catches for 77 yards and a score. Ja’Marr Chase, meanwhile, posted just 3.2 fantasy points, but slow openings have not been unusual for him, so there is no reason to overreact yet.

Detroit and Buffalo now have little time to recover before Thursday Night Football, and several Week 1 losers, including Dallas, Cleveland, and Atlanta, will try to regroup quickly against familiar opponents in Week 2.
