Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly brought his Portugal career to an abrupt close at the age of 41, with Portuguese outlet O Jogo saying the decision is final and “100 per cent certain.” The move followed a tense day in Copenhagen, where he left Portugal’s camp after a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The drama unfolded on the eve of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League A meeting with Denmark, a match Ronaldo was never expected to play in after the situation escalated behind the scenes.
Reporting from MARCA said Ronaldo walked out of the squad’s base at Parken Stadium after tensions with the coach came to a head. He left in a vehicle belonging to the Portuguese Football Federation just as teammates were arriving for training.
Only Francisco Conceicao had yet to join the full group at that point. Ronaldo had not trained, and his exit made it clear he intended to head straight for his private jet and leave for Madrid.
The departure came soon after Jesus addressed the media and made it plain that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark. The coach also signalled that he would not build his plan around one player, no matter how influential that player might be.
Those comments appeared to be the turning point. Within hours, Ronaldo had left the camp and was in the air, turning a squad issue into an international talking point.
What might have been a private departure quickly became a public spectacle. Marca reported that Ronaldo’s aircraft became the most tracked flight in the world almost immediately.
For a player whose every move draws attention, the reaction showed just how closely fans were watching this latest twist in his international story.
Ronaldo later addressed the situation directly on Instagram. He said that after the national team’s press conference, and after speaking with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, he had chosen to leave the training camp.
He also said he would explain the full reasons to Portuguese supporters later, while making clear that his commitment to the national team had never weakened. He ended by wishing Portugal and all of his teammates the best.
If the reports are correct, Ronaldo’s international record ends with numbers unmatched in Portuguese football. He leaves with 234 appearances and 146 goals for his country, along with the major triumph of the 2016 European Championship.

The precise fallout with Jesus has not been fully explained, and Ronaldo has promised to give his version later. Even so, the reporting points to the same conclusion: one of football’s most famous international careers may have ended not with a farewell match, but with a walkout, a flight, and a short message to a nation.
