The Philadelphia 76ers looked finished at halftime, yet they left Cleveland with one of the most remarkable victories in franchise history. After trailing by 29 points, Philadelphia defeated the Cavaliers 114-106 on Thursday night at Xfinity Arena.
The comeback became official when Tyrese Maxey converted a transition opportunity created by LeBron James and buried a three-pointer. Cleveland immediately called timeout, while Maxey celebrated toward a crowd that had been booing its own team moments earlier.
ESPN reported that the result represented Philadelphia’s largest comeback during the play-by-play era. It was also Cleveland’s biggest blown lead and the most dramatic comeback of James’s 24-year NBA career.
Philadelphia’s revival began with a defensive adjustment from Nick Nurse. Cleveland had repeatedly attacked through direct pick-and-rolls before the interval, producing 1.08 points per possession on 27 such plays, according to GeniusIQ data cited by ESPN.
That action lost its effectiveness after the break. The Cavaliers used 20 direct picks in the second half but managed only 0.56 points per possession. By changing the defensive coverage, Nurse removed the foundation of Cleveland’s attack.
Philadelphia also solved its turnover problem. The Sixers committed 15 giveaways in the opening half, matching their highest first-half total since January 2024. They had only two turnovers after halftime, while Cleveland gave the ball away 15 times.
Those extra possessions helped transform the game. The Cavaliers scored 69 points before halftime but just 37 afterward, allowing Philadelphia to build momentum without repeatedly surrendering easy scoring chances.
The third quarter supplied the first major shift. Philadelphia opened the period with an 8-0 run and outscored Cleveland 37-21. Jaylen Brown, who had only four points before the interval, identified that quarter as the moment the Sixers began to believe.
Philadelphia still entered the final period eight points behind, but the deficit continued to shrink. Maxey led the charge with 32 points and six assists, giving the Sixers constant pressure off the dribble and a clear emotional spark.
The lead changed hands with 6:54 remaining. Joel Embiid created space over Jarrett Allen and connected on a 16-foot jumper, putting Philadelphia ahead for good. He later called the comeback one of the three best performances of his career.
Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell had appeared unstoppable early, scoring 30 points through three quarters. Philadelphia’s revised coverage limited him to two points in the fourth, and both came after the result was effectively decided.
Embiid said the group refused to collapse in a way previous Sixers teams might have. Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe described the contest as the best atmosphere he had experienced as a professional.
James, who delivered the pass for Maxey’s decisive three, offered a more measured assessment. He joked that Philadelphia should not expect to win by repeatedly recovering from 29-point holes.
That warning captures the real lesson. The Sixers did not prove that any deficit is manageable. They showed how quickly a game can change when coaching adjustments, disciplined ball handling and confident shot-making arrive at the same time.
