Old Trafford Turmoil Puts Carrick’s Future in Doubt

Manchester United’s managerial uncertainty has intensified after a damaging 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. The result extended the club’s winless run to eight matches and left Michael Carrick under severe pressure, while Antonio Conte has rejected claims that he is already in advanced negotiations with United.

Bournemouth Expose United’s Growing Problems

United produced another flat performance at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25, as Bournemouth secured a convincing victory. Rayan Simplício Rocha opened the scoring before Marcus Tavernier doubled the visitors’ advantage shortly before half-time. Evanilson completed the result in the second half.

  • Bruno Fernandes remained an unused substitute.
  • Bournemouth controlled the match and deserved their three-goal margin.
  • United have now gone eight games without a win.

The loss came only four days after United were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League. Fernandes had reportedly questioned Carrick’s tactical approach after that match, but the manager still chose to leave his captain out against Bournemouth. Carrick described the decision as a football choice rather than a disciplinary measure.

That decision became a major talking point as United struggled to create any attacking momentum. Supporters sang Carrick’s name during the defeat, but directed much of their frustration towards the club’s ownership and leadership.

A Poor League Start Has Increased the Pressure

United’s domestic form explains why discussion about the next manager has become unavoidable. The club collected only six points from its opening six Premier League matches, its weakest start since 1986. Opta figures also indicated that seven points from seven games had already represented the club’s worst total at that stage of a Premier League campaign.

Carrick’s position is particularly difficult because he earned the permanent role after guiding United to third place last season. That finish restored Champions League football, and he signed his contract only around five months ago.

Despite the recent collapse, reports indicate that Carrick is expected to remain in the dugout for the trip to Chelsea. His presence for another match, however, does not guarantee that the board intends to keep him long term.

Conte Rejects Claims of Advanced Talks

Antonio Conte addressed the speculation through an Instagram statement on October 23. The former Napoli manager said he was not involved in advanced negotiations with any club and dismissed reports that he had already demanded complete control over a potential new project.

Conte has been out of work since leaving Napoli by mutual agreement on June 4. He won Serie A during his first season at the club, before Napoli finished second in 2025-26.

His clarification does not completely remove him from consideration, but it does suggest that no appointment is close. Any formal approach would still need to cover the manager’s authority, recruitment influence and working conditions.

Why Conte Remains a High-Profile Option

Conte’s record makes him one of the most experienced names linked with the vacancy. He is reported to be the only manager to have won Serie A with Juventus, Inter and Napoli. He also claimed the Premier League title with Chelsea in 2016-17, his first season in England.

His ability to improve struggling teams is another reason his name continues to attract attention. Chelsea and Napoli had both finished 10th before Conte took charge, yet each club quickly competed at the top of its domestic league.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has backed the idea of appointing Conte, arguing that the Italian could bring greater standards and authority to a squad that appears to have lost direction.

Other Names in the Manchester United Conversation

Conte is not considered the only possibility. Eddie Howe is reportedly favoured by United’s sporting director Jason Wilcox after leaving Newcastle on July 30. Howe would offer Premier League experience and a less confrontational leadership style.

  • Eddie Howe: A reported preferred option for Jason Wilcox and currently without a club.
  • Unai Emery: Still managing Aston Villa, meaning United could face a compensation payment of roughly £20 million.
  • Julian Nagelsmann: A respected coach whose work with Bayern Munich and Germany has attracted interest from United’s recruitment department.
  • Antonio Conte: A proven title winner whose availability makes him an obvious headline candidate, despite his denial of advanced talks.

Conte’s short managerial spells remain a concern. Juventus is reportedly the only club where he stayed beyond two seasons, while his other appointments lasted two years or less. Ashley Young, who worked with Conte at Inter, has also described lengthy post-match meetings and training sessions that could become repetitive.

Chelsea Match Could Define the Timeline

The visit to Chelsea now carries significance beyond the league table. Another defeat could force United’s leadership to move from evaluating possible replacements to making an immediate decision.

Conte would provide experience and an established winning record, but his demanding methods and limited long-term stays would create their own questions. Howe, Emery and Nagelsmann represent different approaches, yet the first decision is whether Carrick can survive the next fixture.
