Two of the NHL’s brightest young stars will share the spotlight again on Saturday night.
The Toronto Maple Leafs host the New York Islanders at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 17, with Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer preparing for their second NHL meeting.
McKenna was selected No. 1 overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, while Schaefer went first overall one year earlier in 2025.
That alone makes this one of the most interesting games on Saturday’s NHL schedule.
But there is more to watch than just the two young stars.
Toronto also has Auston Matthews leading the offence, while the Islanders arrive with one of the league’s most talented young defencemen already playing a major role.
The biggest storyline is simple.
Gavin McKenna vs Matthew Schaefer.
The two former No. 1 picks already faced each other earlier this season when the Islanders defeated Toronto 2-1.
Neither player recorded a point in that first matchup.
McKenna finished with one shot on goal in 15:32 of ice time, while Schaefer had three shots and regularly found himself matched against Toronto’s highly rated rookie.
This time, however, McKenna enters the matchup with considerably more confidence.
McKenna began his NHL career quietly.
He failed to record a point in his first three games, but that changed quickly.
The 18-year-old then put together a three-game point streak, producing four points with one goal and three assists.
His first NHL goal came against the Nashville Predators, and he later added assists against Vegas and Colorado.
That improvement is important for Toronto.
McKenna is beginning to look more comfortable with the speed and physicality of the NHL, while his offensive creativity is becoming increasingly visible.
Saturday gives him another opportunity to show how quickly he is adapting.
And doing it against Schaefer would make the performance even more interesting.
Matthew Schaefer is no longer simply a promising young defenceman.
He has already established himself as one of New York’s most important players.
Schaefer entered this season as the reigning Calder Trophy winner, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie.
Last season, he recorded 59 points and scored 23 goals, setting an NHL record for points by an 18-year-old defenceman and tying the single-season record for goals by a rookie defenceman.
He has continued to take on a major role this season.
Ahead of Saturday’s game, Schaefer had four assists and was averaging more than 25 minutes of ice time per game, the highest mark on the Islanders.
That means McKenna may see plenty of him again.
The young players may dominate the headlines, but Toronto still revolves around Auston Matthews.
The Maple Leafs captain remains their most dangerous scoring threat and gives Toronto a major advantage whenever he finds space in the offensive zone.
Matthews has also played an important role in McKenna’s development.
He assisted on McKenna’s first NHL goal earlier this month and has spoken positively about the rookie’s confidence since joining the team.
For New York, slowing Matthews will still be one of the biggest priorities.
If the Islanders focus too much attention on Toronto’s young star, Matthews can punish them.
If they focus too much on Matthews, McKenna may find more room.
That is what makes Toronto’s attack increasingly difficult to defend.
The Maple Leafs entered the season looking to respond after missing the playoffs last year.
Toronto has made several changes to its roster, while McKenna has added another exciting dimension to the offence.
Saturday’s matchup gives the Leafs another opportunity to build momentum early in the season.
It is also a chance to reverse the result of their first meeting with New York.
The Islanders won that game 2-1, so Toronto already knows how difficult this matchup can become.
A stronger offensive performance will likely be necessary this time.
New York’s path to victory starts with keeping Toronto away from dangerous scoring areas.
The Islanders were successful at limiting the Leafs during their first meeting, and Schaefer’s mobility gives them an important weapon against Toronto’s speed.
They will also need strong goaltending.
When Matthews and Toronto’s skilled forwards begin creating chances in quick succession, the game can change very quickly.
New York cannot allow the Leafs to turn Saturday night into an open, end-to-end contest.
A slower and more controlled game would likely suit the Islanders much better.
McKenna enters the game with growing confidence after finding the scoresheet in several consecutive games.
His speed and creativity make him one of Toronto’s most interesting offensive players.
Schaefer will likely play heavy minutes again.
His ability to defend, move the puck and join the attack could have a major impact on the result.
Matthews remains the player New York cannot afford to lose track of.
Whether he is scoring himself or creating space for teammates, Toronto’s captain can change the game in a single shift.
A few areas could determine who wins on Saturday.
The Leafs will want to create pressure early rather than allowing New York to settle into a defensive rhythm.
Their individual battle may not decide the entire game, but it will be one of the most interesting matchups to follow.
A close game could easily be decided by one power-play opportunity or one costly penalty.
Both teams have enough offensive talent to create quality chances, making goaltending another major factor.
Saturday’s matchup has all the ingredients for an entertaining night in Toronto.
The Maple Leafs want to build momentum at home.
The Islanders have already shown they can beat them.
And at the centre of it all is another meeting between Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer, the NHL’s two most recent No. 1 draft picks.
McKenna is starting to find his offensive rhythm.
Schaefer is already playing like a key piece of the Islanders’ lineup.
Add Auston Matthews to the mix, and there will be no shortage of star power at Scotiabank Arena.
For Toronto, the goal is simple: turn McKenna’s growing confidence into another strong performance and get a different result against New York.
