Hurricanes vs Flames Preview: Can Calgary Upset the Stanley Cup Champions?

The Calgary Flames face one of their toughest tests of the young NHL season on Sunday night.

Calgary hosts the Carolina Hurricanes at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 18, with the defending Stanley Cup champions arriving as one of the hottest teams in hockey.

The contrast between the two sides could hardly be bigger.

Carolina entered Saturday’s game against Winnipeg with a 6-1-1 record, while Calgary has opened the season at just 1-5-0.

For the Flames, this is a chance to produce a major upset and finally create some positive momentum.

For Carolina, the goal is simple: continue looking like the team to beat.

Hurricanes vs Flames: A Huge Test for Calgary

Calgary’s start to the season has been difficult.

The Flames have won only one of their first six games and have already allowed 29 goals, compared with just 12 scored.

That makes Sunday’s matchup especially challenging.

Carolina is not just another strong opponent. The Hurricanes are the reigning Stanley Cup champions, having defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

They also dominated last year’s playoffs, finishing their Stanley Cup run with a 16-3 postseason record.

Calgary therefore enters Sunday as the clear underdog.

But hockey rarely goes exactly as expected.

Carolina Has Started Like a Champion

The Hurricanes have shown very little sign of a Stanley Cup hangover.

Carolina entered the weekend at 6-1-1, continuing the form that carried the team to the championship last season.

Sebastian Aho has once again been at the centre of Carolina’s attack.

Ahead of Saturday’s game against Winnipeg, Aho already had six goals and seven assists, leading a Hurricanes offence that has started the season with confidence.

Carolina’s strength, however, goes far beyond one player.

The Hurricanes are difficult to play against because they can pressure teams all over the ice, generate shots quickly and spend long stretches controlling possession.

That style could create serious problems for a Calgary team that has struggled defensively.

Calgary Needs a Response

The Flames did not expect to begin the season this way.

A 1-5-0 start has already put pressure on Calgary to turn things around before the early-season problems become much bigger.

Sunday provides an opportunity to change the mood.

A victory against the Stanley Cup champions would immediately become Calgary’s biggest result of the season.

It could also give a young Flames roster an important confidence boost.

The challenge will be avoiding the defensive mistakes that have hurt Calgary through its first six games.

Against Carolina, mistakes can become goals very quickly.

Dustin Wolf Could Be Crucial

If Calgary is going to pull off the upset, goaltending could be one of the biggest factors.

Dustin Wolf remains a key part of the Flames’ plans and has the ability to keep Calgary competitive when the team is under pressure.

The Flames may need exactly that kind of performance on Sunday.

Carolina is capable of generating long periods of offensive pressure, so Calgary’s goaltender could face a heavy workload.

If Wolf can make the important saves early, the Flames may be able to stay close long enough to make Carolina uncomfortable.

But if the Hurricanes score quickly, Calgary could find itself chasing the game.

Can Calgary Slow Down Sebastian Aho?

Containing Sebastian Aho will be another major priority.

Aho entered the weekend as Carolina’s leading goal scorer and one of its top playmakers.

He is dangerous because he does not need much space to create a scoring chance.

Calgary cannot afford to give him easy opportunities through the middle of the ice.

The Flames will need to defend as a unit, limit turnovers and make Carolina work for its chances.

That is much easier said than done.

Home Ice Gives Calgary Some Hope

One advantage Calgary does have is the setting.

The Flames return to the Scotiabank Saddledome for Sunday’s matchup after a short road trip. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time in Calgary, or 8 p.m. ET.

Playing at home could help Calgary find more energy against a Carolina team that will be playing its second road game in two days after facing Winnipeg on Saturday.

That scheduling factor may be important.

Carolina will still enter as the stronger team, but Calgary could try to take advantage of tired legs by pushing the pace early.

Hurricanes vs Flames: What Could Decide the Game?

Several areas could determine whether Calgary can make this matchup competitive.

Calgary’s Start

The Flames cannot afford to fall behind early.

Allowing Carolina to take control in the opening period would make an already difficult matchup even harder.

Goaltending

Calgary may need its goaltender to be one of its best players.

A strong performance in net could give the Flames a chance to stay within one goal heading into the final period.

Turnovers

Carolina is excellent at turning mistakes into immediate offensive pressure.

Calgary must be careful with the puck, particularly in its own zone.

Carolina’s Fatigue

The Hurricanes play in Winnipeg on Saturday before travelling to Calgary.

If Carolina shows any signs of fatigue, the Flames need to take advantage.

Can Calgary Pull Off the Upset?

On paper, Carolina has the clear advantage.

The Hurricanes are the defending Stanley Cup champions and have started the new season strongly.

Calgary, meanwhile, has struggled to score, struggled defensively and enters Sunday with only one win from its first six games.

But that is also what makes this matchup interesting.

There is very little pressure on Calgary to be the favourite.

The Flames can approach the game knowing that a victory would be considered a major upset.

To make it happen, Calgary needs strong goaltending, better defensive discipline and a fast start.

Carolina has already shown why it remains one of the NHL’s strongest teams.

Now the Flames get their chance to see whether they can shock the champions.
