The Winnipeg Jets welcome the Anaheim Ducks to Canada Life Centre on Friday night in a matchup between two teams that have opened the 2026-27 NHL season with plenty of promise. Winnipeg has collected points in each of its first four games, while Anaheim has already shown that its young core can challenge strong opponents.
The spotlight will naturally fall on Kyle Connor. The Winnipeg winger has scored five times in four games, including both goals in the Jets’ latest 3-2 victory over Colorado. His next goal would give him sole possession of third place on the franchise’s all-time scoring list, making this game more than a routine early-season meeting.
The Ducks and Jets are scheduled to face off Friday, October 9, at 8 p.m. ET, or 7 p.m. CT in Winnipeg. The game will be played at Canada Life Centre, where the Jets enter with a 3-0-1 record.
Winnipeg has won three straight games by a 3-2 score, including its comeback victory over the Avalanche. Anaheim, meanwhile, is 2-1-0 after dropping its most recent game to Edmonton. The standings remain young, but both teams have already revealed important strengths and weaknesses.
| Team | Record | Recent Result | Primary Threat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winnipeg Jets | 3-0-1 | 3-2 win over Colorado | Kyle Connor’s finishing ability |
| Anaheim Ducks | 2-1-0 | 5-2 loss to Edmonton | Power-play production |
Connor has been one of the NHL’s most productive scorers during the opening week. He has seven points in four games, with five goals and two assists, and he has already delivered two-goal performances twice this season.
His latest pair came against Colorado. Connor scored the deciding goal with only one minute left in regulation, turning a tense game into another Winnipeg victory.
The performance also pushed Connor’s career total with the Jets and former Thrashers franchise to 328 goals. That matches Ilya Kovalchuk for third place in franchise history. Mark Scheifele and Dale Hawerchuk remain ahead of him, but another goal against Anaheim would give Connor the spot by himself.
That milestone could add energy to an already important matchup. Connor is not simply riding a hot streak; he is doing so while playing a central role on Winnipeg’s top line and first power-play unit.
Stopping Connor will require more than assigning a defender to him. Mark Scheifele’s playmaking and Cole Perfetti’s recent scoring form give the Jets multiple ways to attack.
Perfetti has scored in three consecutive games, while Scheifele recorded two assists in the win over Colorado. Their production makes it risky for Anaheim to overload its coverage toward Connor.
The chemistry between Scheifele and Connor was evident on the late winning goal against Colorado. If Anaheim allows either player too much time with the puck, the Ducks could spend much of the night defending near their own net.
The Ducks are not without answers. Leo Carlsson has already played a major role in Anaheim’s early success and remains the team’s most influential playmaker.
Carlsson recorded two assists in the loss to Edmonton. He also helped decide Anaheim’s earlier overtime win against Florida by setting up Mikael Granlund for the winning goal. His size, vision and ability to carry the puck through traffic make him especially dangerous when he receives room in the center of the ice.
Beckett Sennecke offers another major concern for Winnipeg. He scored both Anaheim goals against Edmonton, and each came on the power play. The Ducks have also scored all three of their goals in their overtime win over Florida with the man advantage.
Those numbers make discipline a central part of Winnipeg’s game plan. Anaheim may have surrendered five goals in the second period against Edmonton, but its special teams can still punish an opponent that takes unnecessary penalties.
Winnipeg’s success has not depended solely on its top forwards. Stuart Skinner made 32 saves against Colorado and kept the Jets close while the Avalanche controlled stretches of play.
Anaheim’s young forwards are capable of generating chances quickly, especially during power-play sequences. Skinner may need another strong performance if the Ducks create traffic in front of him or attack off turnovers.
For Anaheim, the defensive challenge is equally demanding. The Ducks cannot afford extended shifts in their own zone, particularly against a Winnipeg line that can turn one defensive mistake into a scoring chance.
Anaheim’s best route to an upset begins with pressure on Winnipeg’s puck carriers. If the Ducks can disrupt Scheifele’s passing options and force Connor to receive the puck along the boards, they can reduce the effectiveness of the Jets’ top unit.
Winnipeg should respond by moving the puck quickly and attacking before Anaheim’s defensive structure is set. Sustained pressure could expose the same problems that appeared during the Ducks’ five-goal second period against Edmonton.
The Jets also need to avoid becoming careless after taking an early lead. Anaheim has already demonstrated that it can start aggressively against a quality opponent, and Carlsson’s ability to create offense could keep the visitors within striking distance.
Connor enters the game with five goals in four appearances and a chance to move past Kovalchuk on Winnipeg’s franchise scoring list. His shot volume and current confidence make him the clearest offensive focal point.
Scheifele’s two-assist performance against Colorado showed how important his distribution remains. Anaheim must limit his time and space if it wants to contain Connor.
Carlsson has already produced key assists this season. His ability to carry the puck through the middle and involve teammates makes him Anaheim’s most important creator.
After scoring twice on the power play against Edmonton, Sennecke represents a direct warning to Winnipeg’s penalty kill. He could become a major factor if the Jets lose discipline.
Skinner’s performance against Colorado provided a strong foundation for Winnipeg’s latest win. Another busy night could await him against Anaheim’s developing attack.
Anaheim possesses enough speed and skill to make this a competitive game. Carlsson and Sennecke can create problems, particularly if the Ducks earn several power plays.
Winnipeg still appears to have the stronger overall formula. The Jets have home ice, a 3-0-1 record, a productive top line and a goaltender coming off an excellent performance. Connor’s scoring form gives them an additional advantage in a game that could be decided by one or two chances.
Prediction: Winnipeg Jets 4, Anaheim Ducks 3.
Anaheim should generate offense, but Winnipeg’s top-line chemistry and Connor’s pursuit of franchise history make the Jets the better choice to finish Friday with another close victory.
