Yggdrasil Gaming is bringing the beautiful game to Mount Olympus with the launch of Goals of Olympus BoltLock™, a new slot title that fuses football fever with Greek mythology and the studio’s signature BoltLock™ mechanic. In a recent interview with CasinoWow, Senior Game Designer Marcin Tomala walked through the thinking behind the game, from its theme to its math model.
A fresh take on a crowded genre
Football-themed slots tend to surge in popularity around major tournaments, and the market is now crowded with similar titles. Rather than building another straightforward football game, Yggdrasil’s team asked a different question: what if the Gods of Olympus took to the pitch?
“Football is one of the world’s most recognizable and universally loved sports, so we wanted to combine that excitement with another timeless favorite: Greek mythology,” Tomala explained. The result, he said, is “a fresh, light-hearted game that’s fun, approachable” — a deliberate departure from the more conventional football slots already on the market.
Bright visuals, epic sound
The studio built the game’s look and feel around energy and warmth. Expressive god characters, a casual art style, and layered visual effects were used to heighten the feeling of every goal-like win.
Audio plays an equally important role in selling the mashup. The soundtrack and sound design blend the grandeur associated with mythology with the roar of a live football match, aiming for an experience that is, in Tomala’s words, “both epic and playful.”
BoltLock™ drives the momentum
Yggdrasil is known for its proprietary Game Engagement Mechanics (GEMs), and Goals of Olympus BoltLock™ leans on the studio’s BoltLock™ system to keep players engaged.
Every win triggers a full respin, unlocking additional reel positions as play progresses. As more positions open up, the number of ways to win climbs to as many as 3,125 — giving players a tangible sense of building momentum. Once the entire grid is unlocked, the game shifts into its finale: players gain access to Extra Lives and Multipliers, turning each subsequent cascade into a potentially bigger payoff.
No single blueprint for development
Asked whether math models, mechanics, visuals, or narrative come first in development, Tomala was clear that there’s no fixed formula. “There’s no single formula, as every project has its own starting point,” he said. “Sometimes it’s an idea for a mechanic, sometimes it’s a strong visual concept or theme that inspires the entire experience.”
For this title specifically, the football-meets-mythology concept and the BoltLock™ progression mechanic developed side by side, with math, visuals, and presentation all reinforcing each other throughout the process.
What players can expect
Tomala said he hopes players will respond to the combination of a fresh aesthetic and a satisfying sense of progression. “The mechanics are easy to understand, with every spin having the potential to build toward something bigger,” he said, adding that the playful theme and memorable characters should make it “easy to pick up and enjoyable to come back to.”
